Design Your Own Garden
with Elaine Newington Ward
This is the view from one of the seats in the wild garden in summer.
Many of the small trees in this area are self-seeded wild plums which will be cut down as the planted trees mature.
The seat faces eastwards across the wild garden towards the lawn and the formal garden beyond the pond.
This is a sunny spot in the morning but provides a pleasant shady corner in the heat of a summer afternoon.
Some of the wild plums have been wired together to create an arch which frames the distant view from this spot.
Planted trees include a Liriodendron, a golden whitebeam, a Sorbus Chinese Lace and a Betula jackmontii Silver Shadow.
Several different varieties of native grasses are allowed to grow to flowering in this area interspesred with ornamental grasses such as leymus and miscanthus. Some non-invasive bamboos, geraniums and solidago also grow amongst the grass.
